Embracing the RAIN ~ Our tips for a rainy wedding day
It’s your wedding day. You throw open the curtains, expecting the Disney Snow White dream of birds and squirrels rushing to greet you and what you actually find is… a soggy reminder that you can never rely on the UK to be dry, even in July!
All the meticulous planning and excitement can feel like a bit of a waste of time but we’re here to try to put a bit of a different spin on it. We want you to know that a bit of rain doesn’t need to dampen your spirits as well as your clothes and it definitely doesn’t need to ruin the magick.
As seasoned North Yorkshire wedding photographers (by that we obviously mean we’ve been rained on plenty), we have seen first-hand how couples have turned an unexpected shower on their wedding day into unforgettable moments. Let’s talk about embracing the rain!
Prepare for the unexpected
First thing’s first ~ we need to be ready for the possibility. Nobody wants to think it’s going to rain on their wedding day but we can’t control the weather and it seems to be getting more and more unpredictable. What we can control though is what our response to the weather is ~ how we react and what we make of it. Instead of fretting over it, consider the following tips to help ensure your day remains the magickal adventure you envisioned.
Venue Planning
Before your wedding day, find a time to chat with your venue about what their plans are if it rains. They probably have some contingency plans already and if they’re really good they might have a couple of ideas and you get to pick the one you like the best. Knowing what the options are and getting a plan in place is a great way to head off some of the worry about what might happen if it’s decided to chuck it down.
Umbrella Etiquette
An umbrella isn’t just a practical accessory ~ it can also add some charm and character to your wedding aesthetic. A good brolly photo can be dramatic and striking or even just add a bit of whimsical fun and good humour to your wedding gallery.
If the forecast is looking like it might not cooperate with you ~ encourage your guests to bring their umbrellas and consider providing a couple of extras for people who might forget. At least that way people can stay a bit more dry as they move around your wedding venue.
Shoe solutions
Wet shoes and soggy feet are the last things you need to be worried about on your wedding day. Be prepared and pack a change of shoes, either to change into when yours get wet or to use as an “outside” pair and keep your nice shoes for inside where it’s dry. Also it might be good to consider a small microfibre towel to dry off and make some toasty, dry socks too. We don’t know about you but if our feet are cold, we feel cold.
If all else fails ~ bring out yer wellies! Similar to a brolly, a pair of wellies can add some fun to your wedding gallery. Whether they’re bright colours, bold patterns or just a good old black or green pair, everyone loves a pair of wellies.
Emergency essentials
Stash an emergency towel behind the bar or under the top table. Having a chance to dry off and warm up a bit will be welcome if you do decide to embrace the rain and get a bit wet.
Bring an extra layer in case you get a bit chilly after you’ve been out in the rain. A Dryrobe on a wedding day is unconventional but we can’t say it’s not an absolute vibe ~ and one we can get behind!
A sense of humour. Definitely try to remember to bring your sense of humour and adventure. Life’s a series of little adventures and approaching your wedding with that in mind is setting yourself up for a fun and unforgettable day.

While it’s not a dream wedding scenario, rain does present an opportunity for spontaneity, fun and some cute, romantic moments. By being practical and prepared and ready to embrace the weather you can make sure your day remains just as magickal as you deserve.
